I originally tried perfume-making back in 2020 after I left my job due to the pandemic. That's when I created the acronym for Dunbi (doon-bee): Diversely Unique. Newly Bloomed. Illuminated. It wasn't until a year after a bout with trial and error (pleather craft and jewelry making) that I added the tag line: Dunbi is a definition. Beauty is a craft. In 2021 I finally decided to go into the beauty industry by opening an Etsy shop where I would sell decorated nails and hand sewn wigs. (Newly Bloomed.) I opened my shop on April 6th, and received my first two sales by the end of the month. My second sale is what helped me realize I chose the right. My second customer was undergoing chemotherapy and had ordered a wig, a burgundy unit named 'Reserved Yet Spicy'. Instead of giving the wigs actual girl names, I decided you use positive words, personalities and character traits, so that way the person wearing it can actually have a connection with it. I believe people glow in a special way when they wear something that represents who they are, and I want to help them find that glow. (Illuminated.) She also gave me my first review and first 5 star rating. We've become great friends and even collaborated on some wigs. From there, I've expanded to a variety shop that houses fashion, wellness, kitchen, hobby, and more for all, including items I design-Designed by Dunbi. (Diversely Unique.) I also send handwritten letters to customers, thanking them for their support of my business.
I am a Black Woman Owned Business and I can honestly say that specifically, hasn't had much of an impact on my business. I know that there are a lot of stigmas in most to all communities, which I why I try to steer clear of them and focus primarily on the providing the best service I can as well as transparency with customers as well as other business owners. Existing as a Black Woman and facing challenges that come with it is the main reason why I've made my brand to be inclusive and expansive. When you know what it's like to be hurt and discriminated against, it's unnecessary to put others through it. This is why despite the social stigmas/preferences, I carry an array of items for everyone, including clothing for Plus Size persons, crafting/hobby supplies and interests. I am a Neutral Entrepreneur/Business, meaning that I stay away from and do not incorporate politics or social ideologies within my brand. I make it a point to pay attention to what people think and feel in regard to business on social platforms and I found that many consumers feel that it can break down a company's meaning, be divisive, and even be offensive if it's not displayed properly. I also don't directly showcase people of particular groups or affiliations since I don't want anyone to feel it's a cash grab, or feel as if how they identify is being exploited, simply for revenue. Overall, I want a safe, inviting space for everyone.
